Ms. Abreu King-Jones serves as Axcella’s Corporate Secretary and leads Legal affairs and strategy outside of intellectual property matters.

Prior to joining Axcella, Heidy managed the Corporate Law Department and was lead commercial counsel at Sarepta Therapeutics, Inc. She was responsible for, and worked closely with her legal team and management on, Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) and NASDAQ matters including shareholder meetings, periodic reports and filings, corporate governance and compensation matters. Heidy also provided legal support for business partners in all Sarepta departments (Human Resources, Manufacturing, Investor Relations, Commercial, Medical Affairs, Patient Advocacy, Compliance, Finance, Clinical, etc.) on key projects including drafting, commenting on or negotiating contracts, policies, communications and documents for external and internal use. She was also on Sarepta’s promotional review committee, medical review committee, 401(K) committee and the sponsorship and grants committees. Heidy was the legal lead in Sarepta's commercial readiness working group (responsible for negotiating and finalizing key commercial contracts and developing Sarepta's commercial compliance program and policies). Throughout 2017, Heidy was the lead attorney advising on Sarepta's global expansion efforts.

Prior to joining Sarepta, Heidy was an associate in the Securities and Public Company practice group at Ropes & Gray LLP where she focused her practice on representing public companies in corporate matters including mergers, acquisitions, corporate governance issues, SEC filings and compliance matters, initial public offerings and sales of common stock, bonds, debentures and notes. Heidy has experience representing clients in various industries including the utility, technology, retail and pharmaceutical industries. At Ropes & Gray LLP, Heidy also represented pro bono clients on asylum, immigration, medical and housing matters. Heidy currently serves as a Board member of WriteBoston.

Heidy holds a J.D. and LL.M in International and Comparative Law from Cornell Law School and a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from Dartmouth College.

What led you to join Axcella?   
Axcella is researching and developing a new approach to address health and disease that has the potential to be a game changer in healthcare and nutrition.  

What is your greatest non-professional achievement?  
My daughter, she never ceases to amaze me.

Who is your role model?  
On a personal level, my mom, she has strength, grit and the biggest heart I have come across. On a professional level, Henri Termeer, one of the earlier pioneers of the biotech industry and someone who was relentless in his mission to help and save patient lives. He was known to lead with brilliance, humanity, humility and inspired those who worked with him to become the best version of themselves and overcome the roadblocks and challenges faced in researching, developing and making drugs accessible to patients in need. 

Favorite author? 
So many to choose from, Jane Austen, Maya Angelou, Gabriel Garcia Marquez Junot Diaz are a few of my favorites.

Favorite vacation destination?  
The Caribbean
